My Vision is to See M-Squared as one of the top 100 IT Companies from India, and we have the right product portfolio for achieving the same – M Vasudevan
Kerala’s biggest IT Park – Technopark has been a game changer for the IT in Kerala. Set up 25 years ago, the park set the ball rolling for significant changes in Kerala right from shifting the focus from one of the most beautiful tourist locations in Kerala to one of the most sought after IT destination in Kerala.
M Vasudevan, the name synonymous with people of Kerala as one of the founding team members of India’s first IT Park – Technopark. As Sr. Manager for Business Development, MV as he’s fondly known played a pivotal role in shaping Technopark the way it is today. After 30 years of serving the Kerala Government, MV has now taken up the role of Chief Operating Officer at M-Squared Technologies, one of the leading IT companies in Technopark. In a candid interview with Chief Editor Sajeev Kumar, MV reminisces his journey at Technopark and shares his excitement about his new innings.
- Did you think of a comeback like this when you were stepping down as Sr. Business Development Manager of Technopark?
Yes definitely! I had already made a very positive impact for the Park right from land acquisition to attracting all these companies into the Park. I received a mail from Mr Murali Subramanian; of ORACLE is a testimony for that. Mr Murali Subramanian, Vice President of ORACLE at that time had said “I always will take great memories of my association with Trivandrum. You played an important role in that process. I know that ORACLE is very much entrenched in Trivandrum.” Now it is all in place and I am sure the incumbent team is capable to take it forward.
- How do you see this second innings after a successful stint playing a significant role in the setting up of Technopark and making it the biggest IT Park of the country?
Second innings is always your second chance to correct whatever shortcomings were during the first innings and to apply your mind positively to issues and make it a success. You know your shortcomings and you have to play the game as it comes. There is no doubt that I was fortunate enough to play a key role in the success of the largest IT Park in the country. I hope with the kind of support that I am getting from the Management and Members of Staff of M Squared, one of the oldest companies in Technopark, I would be able to take this company to the next level and make it one of the top companies in India.
- You must have got quite a few offers from various companies in Technopark. Why M-Squared?
Yes I had few offers from various institutions and I was also thinking whether I should go on myself as a freelance consultant. M-Squared attracted me because of its potential to become one of the top 100 companies in India since they have good products in health care sector which they have developed over the last 20 years. They have the best of technical talent available for education, training and development activities. It is only that they require some type of a push to market their portfolio among the target audience and which I intend to take up.
- Please brief on your role as COO of M-Squared
My role as COO of M Squared would be to bring in the required professionalism and customer orientation that are required to shape the company to fulfill the dream of its Chairman Mr Jacob Manimalethu.
- What are you plans as COO of M-Squared? What changes do you see your experience is going to bring to the organisation?
The vision of Mr Jacob Malimalethu is to make M Squared a Software Product Company by providing total support in healthcare, travel and hospitality in addition to other routine areas like Web/Software development, mobile applications, medical/legal/business transcription and CAD. As explained earlier, the company with its almost 20 years of experience has developed already US Certified products for the health care industry like Total Clinic Management System and products for medical/legal /business transcription which can be used by other companies who are in that area of business. These two products have huge market potential and by targeting a reasonably good market share in CAD, Transcription services, Mobile and other Software development activity, I am sure, the company will really sail into the big league. I hope my long experience in business development and contacts will definitely bridge the gap between what is available and what is expected.
- How do you see the BPO sector in Kerala growing?
The BPO Sector has been growing in Kerala over a period of time. All the major players who have set up their operations in Kerala are expanding their activities. We have companies like RR Donnelley, Allianz Cornhill, Mckinsey & Co., Ernst & Young, Aegis, Aptara and many others in Technopark. What we need is to attract new companies also come and invest in Kerala and provide them the type of support that they require so that Kerala can play a meaningful role in the BPO Sector..
- How do you see the future of Technopark and how is it going to benefit Kerala further?
With the projects like Technopark Phase III and Technocity which are already in the pipeline, I believe Technopark will be able to provide 200,000 direct job opportunities and 800,000 indirect job opportunities thereby making Trivandrum one of the most modern cities in the world. Technopark will definitely require support from City Development Authorities and State/Central Government for this to happen during the next 6 to 8 years’ time.
